Leicester City Council’s Festival and Events Department, the producers of Light Up Leicester, are committed to the goals of the LCC Climate Emergency Action Plan in response to the authority’s declaration of the climate emergency in 2019.
We strive to support Leicester’s aim toward net zero carbon emissions by 2030 and commit to seeking out opportunities for best practice within the events sector where possible.
We recognise the threat of climate change to events and festivals. We are committed to finding and implementing change that the industry can achieve to reduce the impact of events and festivals in our city, on the environment and strive to deliver positive environmental impacts.
In November 2023, The Purple Guide published an ‘Environmental Sustainability’ chapter which we will use as a guide to build upon our practices ensuring that they are guided by the industry standards.
In 2024 the Festivals & Events team were selected as 1 of 10 key partners in a Green Events Code of Practice Pilot, led by Vision 2025 and Julie’s Bicycle. The Green Events Code of Practice is a national initiative to establish clear, consistent, and applicable best practice standards for environmental sustainability across the UK outdoor events industry in the absence of legislation or industry-wide guidance.
We aim to align Light Up Leicester with The Green Events Code of Practice.
